I have discovered and experimented several recipes to include chia seeds in my main stream diet. Being a vegan, I am constantly on the lookout for protein sources of food. For the more than two years chia seeds have been a big part of my diet. I have transitioned from take them as gel to delicious vreakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert dishes in a big way.

Vanilla Stevia (to taste)

Mix all ingredients with half of the diced bananas and allow to sit for 20 minutes or even overnight. When ready to eat, add the other half of the diced bananas and enjoy!

There have been many types of “super foods” that have been hyped by the media to provide a great deal of benefits to children and adults alike but one super food in particular is living up to all the hype surrounding it. This super food is known as the chia seeds, which are also referred to as the “Indian running food” mainly because of its history as a highly valued food by the Aztecs. The scientific name of chia seeds is Salvia Hispanica, which is a member of the mint family Lamiaceae.

Chia seeds are rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), calcium, potassium, iron, and other antioxidants. It is for this reason that chia seeds are hailed as a super food which can greatly benefit children as well as adults.

For adults, the recommended daily dosage of chia seeds is 15 grams or 2 tablespoons. On the other hand, minors from the age bracket of 5 to 18 years old may consume 1.4 to 4.3 grams of chia seeds per day. However, it is still highly recommended to consult your doctor about the dosage of chia seeds that you can eat everyday since there have been reported side effects of consuming chia seeds such as gastrointestinal disruptions and chia seeds acting as allergens. In addition to this, pregnant women as well as lactating ones are not advised to eat chia seeds since there have been not enough research about what effects do chia seeds have on them.

Nevertheless, chia seeds offer a great nutritional value to one’s diet if you consume it moderately after consulting your doctor. Children and adults can have chia seeds as a healthy snack alternative to snacks that are not packed with the nutritional value of chia seeds.

In the Mojave desert all the way down to Argentina grows a super food which only recently has become globally popular. This is chia seed which belongs to the mint family and goes by the scientific name Chia Salvia Calumbariae. The benefits of chia seeds have long been known to Native Americans and the the ancient Aztec tribes.

Chia seeds can be roasted, mixed with water and eaten as gruel. It can also be ground to powder and used as flour in baking. One of the benefits of chia seeds is the energy boost it gives. A mere tablespoon of chia seeds in a glass of water can sustain a man to go on a 24-hour march. Long distance hikers now eat these seeds for this same reason.

Omega-3 fatty acids

Among all crops, chia seeds contain the highest percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids. A whooping 60% of chia seed composition is omega-3 fatty acids. Herein lies the amazing health benefit because omega-3 fatty acids prevent cardiovascular problems and improve mental and visual functions.

Protein

Compared to other nutritional grains, chia seeds have higher protein content and the protein it contains is complete as it contains all the essential amino acids. Protein constitutes 19 to 23% of the total weight of chia seeds. This concentration of protein explains the benefits of chia seeds in muscle building and wound and tissue repair.

Fiber

The high-fiber composition is yet another one of the many wonderful properties of chia seeds. A third of their weight is fiber so that a 15-gram serving of chia seeds provides 5 grams of fiber. Fiber aids in bowel cleansing and cholesterol removal.

Calcium

Maintaining bone density, blood pressure regulation and weight control add up to the benefits and this is because of the high calcium content. A 2-ounce serving of chia seeds has 5 times the calcium of a glass of milk.

Antioxidants

Chia seeds contains 3 times more antioxidants than blueberries. This high antioxidant content accounts for the protective benefits against oxidative processes which lead to cancer formation.

Potassium and boron

In addition, chia seeds contain potassium which is essential for blood pressure regulation and boron which is vital for bone health.

The evidence is overwhelming. The benefits of chia seeds are multitudinous hence it is undoubtedly a super food.

Though most of us are used to black chia seeds there are also white chia seeds as well. The black seeds are more predominant to the extent that some people don’t even know that the white version of chia seeds exists. The good news is that the nutritional compositions of both are very similar and only a few minor components are different. And although the soil and temperature where they are grown plays some role in that as well, there is no large difference in the nutritional content of either seed.

Both the black as well as the white chia seeds are considered as super foods so you don’t have to worry about which is better to purchase and eat. People who use the chia seeds for beverages tend to prefer the white version as this doesn’t discolor their drinks. If you are going to drink it raw especially it will be more appealing if you were drinking the white one. If the black seeds are fine for you and don’t turn your appetite then by all means continue to eat the black seeds.

There have been claims made that the white seeds are higher in protein content than the black grains but this is not entirely true. The white seeds may be a little higher in protein than the black seeds based on where they are grown. Since things like the soil and temperature of the place that the plant is grown does affect the nutrient content, both black and white chia seeds grown in the same area will have their entire nutritional content and not just protein alone being identical. So enjoy your chia seeds no matter what color they are, knowing you are still eating the best.

If you are new to chia seeds and are wondering how to eat chia seeds you will be surprised to know that there are many ways you can go about eating these tiny seeds. If you didn’t know before these little seeds are very potent in nutritional content and if you want to ensure that your family is eating healthy then this will be a great addition to your pantry.

Back in the day, the best way how to eat chia seeds was to eat them raw. But we don’t have to do that today as it can be added to a number of different recipes. If you want to, you can still eat them raw as they have a very mild flavor so you don’t have to worry about getting accustomed to it.

Here are a number of ways how to eat chia seeds which are all quite easy to prepare and you will enjoy them to the fullest. First there is ever so popular Mexican drink Chia Fresca. All you need for this is 10 ounces of water and 2 tsp of the chia seeds. If you wish you could add some lime juice and your choice of sweetener or you can use some fruit juice instead of water for flavor.

For the answer to how to eat chia seeds you can add it to your cereal at breakfast or you can add it to your salads at lunch, you can also add it to yogurt for desert. You can add it to cake mixes as well as any other type of baked products and you can ground the seed to make flour which you can use as a substitute for regular flour. You can use the gel as a substitute for thickeners such as cornstarch in all your favorite recipes.

Adding Chia Seed Recipes to your diet are a great way to ensure that you are eating healthy. Chia seeds are very mild in flavor so they can be used in many of your already favorite recipes. Since it can make a gel you can use it as a thickener for sauces, puddings and even fruit jams and jellies.

You will find chia seeds recipes that ask for the whole seeds themselves or the gel, the sprouts or the ground seed. There are quite a lot of these chia seeds recipes on the internet as well as in cookbooks but my all time favorites are some of the best that I have ever tried. So I decided I had to share them with you.

My first favorite is the Chia Rice Salad. This is one of the chia seeds recipes that require the chia gel. For this recipe you put the oil, chia gel, diced garlic, herbs and salt in a jar and shake to mix them together. Once this is thoroughly mixed you can pour it on the rice and toss it around lightly to make an even blend. Stir in the remaining vegetables when this is cool and there you have your chia rice salad.

The next recipe I have for you is a soup; this is one of the chia seeds recipes that call for the dried chia seeds. Here we have the Non-Dairy Creamy Chia Mushroom Soup. For a milk substitute you can use nuts to make your milk. Add 1 cup of your desired nuts to approximately 6 cups of water and blend this until it is smooth. Place the chia seeds in this mix and allow it to stand for 15 minutes. Sauté mushrooms and add to previous mixture then transfer to a pot where you will add the remaining vegetables and allow this to cook for 4 minutes. Add the remaining mushrooms and tomatoes and allow it to cook for 30 minutes after which you can serve.

The next on my list of best chia seeds recipes is a fruit dish. This can be used as a dessert and you can customize it with all your favorite fruits and toppings. This is another recipe that calls for the seeds. Other ingredients you will need an apple, ½ a banana, some raisins, cranberries, your preferred nuts along with some almond butter and a couple scoops of living fuel. Combine all these ingredients in a large bowl and toss and serve.

Enjoy these chia seeds recipes of find some of your own.

The word chia actually comes from an Aztec word that means oily. This is why these chia sees are sometimes called omega 3 seeds. Omega 3 fatty acids are unsaturated fats that are only found in plants. They are not so easy to come by and so you will find that there are a lot of supplements out there for these fatty acids.

Thanks to discovery of chia seeds you no longer have to take these supplements that have all types of fillers. You can instead get a natural source of omega 3 seeds which has a mild taste so it can be added to anything that you eat. Though there are other nuts that contain omega 3 such as the flax seeds and kiwi seeds, it is the chia seeds that contain the most amount and hence the name omega 3 seeds.

You may not know much about chia seeds but instead know about linseed. If you are familiar with the way that linseed agglutinates then that is the same way the chia seeds act when placed to soak in a liquid. This is why these seeds are good for you as they do the same thing when inside your stomach. It slows down the body’s ability to absorb fats and refined carbohydrates thus less is stored.

The beauty about these seeds is that they can be eaten in a number of ways. Since they are so versatile you can have them at any meal whether breakfast, lunch or dinner. They can also be blended in drinks whether hot or cold. If you want to remain creative you can sprout the seeds and use the sprouts in salads as well as the seeds as a topping for the salads. There really is no limit to the many uses that you can find for these omega 3 seeds.

The first of the recipes with chia seeds I will share with you is how to make the basic chia gel which you can use as a thickener for other food items. All you need is some chia seeds and some water; mix 1/3 cup of the seeds with 2 cups of water, stir and allow to stand until the seeds have absorbed the water.

For some more quick recipes with chia seeds you can make sweet chia shortbread. Allow the chia seeds to soak in the apple juice along with the other ingredients then let it stand for around 10 minutes then you can enjoy.
One of my favourite quick recipes with chia seeds is the chia fresca. Just stir all the above ingredients and chill and enjoy this refreshing drink.

Another one of my favourite quick recipes with chia seeds is the Fruity chia. You will need 2 to 3 apples, 8 dates, ¼ cup mulberries and 5 tbsp chia seeds. Blend the apples along with 6 of the dates and transfer this to a bowl. Mix in the mulberries as well as the chia seeds and top with the remaining 2 dates chopped.
